Henri Volans : "The phrase which keeps coming up in my mind about ebooks is evolution" . "I have absolute certainty that we have not reached anything close to the evolutionary ideal of the ebook… I find it absolutely inconceivable that the book can't evolve and change and grow."

In his role at Faber, Volans commissioned the iPad edition of The Waste Land, working with partner company Touch Press on the tablet version of T.S. Eliot's poem.

Volans picked out Thames & Hudson's Cyclepedia iPad app as another good example of book-app innovation during his speech at the event. "It seems a good example of an e-book that does justice to an art book," he said.

set the price of the ebook, so they can't be blamed if the price is
wrong.

But have you ever tried to fix a final ebook price on Amazon ? I did.
With the standard (KDP) Kindle platform, it's a difficult exercise. I
wouln't guarantee you an exact value, I can't really figure out the
final Amazon price of my own ebooks...

In two weeks I have seen two demos of eBooks on TV.
The first was at the BoekenBeurs 2011 in Antwerp. You can see a picture here :

This week at Devoxx, I have seen an other demo on Google TV.

At the end of the Android Keynote, Tim Bray of Google said Mobile Phones in general and Android in particular could help the developing countries. I guess there is an important place for Digital Reading in the mobile scenarios.

The specifications were finished in March, so it was about time that the RFP gets out.

Numeric Shool Project Proposal : Testing digital reading and tablets at school

Today we submitted, together with the Maurice Carême school in Wavre (Belgium), a project proposal in the context of "Ecoles Numérique" (Numeric Shool).

The project we submitted is called "Lecture Numérique à l'Ecole: Test de tablettes" (Digital Reading at School : Tablet Test).

Grand Opening of the Boekenbeurs 2011

Last week (Oct 30, 2011) I had the chance to be invited for the opening of the Boekenbeurs in Antwerp.

We were first invited to listen to the speeches of a.o. Geert Joris and Minister van cultuur Joke Schauvliege. I was a bit dispappointed that no word was said about the Vlaams eBoek Platform (VEP), let's hope it will be the case next year. I believe that the VEP is a major strategic initiative for the book sector in Flanders and that it needs to be supported by the top of the book sector.

After the speeches, I was mainly interested by the e-Paviljoen which nicely shows how digital reading (or e-reading) can be done in many ways: on e-readers, on tablets, on mobile phones, on computers....

For example, you could read a story on a wide touch screen.

After that we visited the fair. Here are some more pictures.

In my eReading Reference Architecture I designed how ePaper Based eReaders (or tablets) could be used to help implement a decentralized Patient File. Extract from the Patient File Case:

"Rather than trying to centralize all Medical information within the various Data Centers (Hospitals, Mutuality, Doctor's practices...), this medical information could be stored on mobile patient's files stored on a simple eReader. This eReader would store all patient's health information: Medical records (radios, exam results), past and future subscriptions, past and present illnesses, allergies, blood type... The Patient would keep his medical record on the eReader USB stick. An archiving service would be proposed by the Government in case the eReader is lost or broken. Of course patient could backup their files at home on their PC on other tiers like Google Health."

How DiCoDE can be translated into an eReading Solution Architecture (eRRA)

Recently, at a Mobile Monday event, I heard about DiCoDE, a framework developed by Fabian Tilmant.
I immediately noticed some similiarities between DiCoDE and my eReading Reference Architecture (eRRA) method. The "eReading content life cycle" can be mapped to the DiCoDE model. In the eRRA methodology we also work on 2 additional topics: the Business Goals and the Entreprise/ICT Architecture.
DiCoDE complements the architecture by providing a kind of "Generic Media Business Process Template".
I might sound a little bit "Chinese" but it isn't. These are just techniques to make sure your new Media initiatives will succeed

Achieve your business goals as a Media company
Make sure you will reach the Consumer by a set of channels
Develop a plan in terms of resources (IT Systems, People, Data, Entreprise/IT Architecture...)

Combinig DiCoDE and eRRA could achieve great results. Here would be a possible modus-operandi :

Defining the business goals (eRRA Methodology, KAOS or GOESIR Method)
Analysing the future Content Value Chain with DiCoDE
Determine the architecture required to implement the value chain (ex: new Portal, new Production Process...) and document them over the 4 eReading Tiers (Archimate Notation). This provides a TO-BE Architectural overview.
Compare the TO-BE Architectural overview with the AS-IS (what elements of the value chain do we have today ?) to provide a project plan

(Note the eRRA methodology can be applied on all kind of Media, not only on eReading. If the "eReader" is a Tablet, there is much more to do than just "read" on the "eReader Tier".)

In order to illustrate a litle bit step 3 I have taken the DiCoDE building blocks and drawn them in an Architectural Overview over the 4 eRRA tiers.

Amazon gives you 70% ? Not always...

With my ebooks I thought I would have a 70% royalty. Amazon gave me only 35%.

I didn't get it until I saw this at the bottom of my KDP reports page:

"Note: 70% royalty option is only available for sales in the US, UK, Canada and Germany. Sales outside the US, UK, Canada and Germany receive 35% royalty. Please see Terms & Conditions for more details on how royalty payments are made."

I think I have to find another way to sell my ebooks in Belgium because on a consumer price of $13,79, I finally get $3.50... While I set the price at $9.9...

1. Abstract

The HPub (HTML Publication) standard is a file format designed to release rich content books in a simple and manageable package.

2. The principles

We want a digital publishing format that:

Allows great designs
Allows both pixel-perfect and flexible reflowable publications
Is simple for authors
Is simple for parsers

3. The Spec

An HPub publication is a normal .zip file with ".hpub" extension. Unpacked books are allowed.
The content format must be HTML5.
It must contain at least one HTML file with extension "html".
If more than one HTML file are included, the pagination order must be alphabetical.
Any HTML file contained in subfolders must be excluded from the pagination order.
All the assets (CSS, images, JS, ...) must be included in the package and referenced relatively from the HTML5 files.

Received by the post today : a Mediamarkt brochure with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10" at 600€.

The Pros of this tablet:
- Android 3.0, an open system that will let you do more with your tablet. Mainly you will have much more control of your device and

- 3G which will allow you to use it everywhere

- Samsung's "finition" and quality

The cons
- The price is not competitive enough against the iPad1 WiFi 3G 32Gb whihc is at 549$ (not such a big difference)

- No USB !!

Since several months we see iPad alternatives (Tablets) at Retailers.

Here in Belgium I have seen some at Photo Hall (Archos, POV MOBII), at FNAC (Toshiba Android Tablet).

Here is an other example here at Macro. Interesting : it runs Windows7 Home Premium.

Would you buy an alternative tablet ? (non iPad) At which price ? Why ?

I was disappointed. Digital Reading was not at all visible . I really had to ask all exponents specifically about their ebook initiatives.

I talked with 25 exponents :

"Although many bookstore and libraries cannot assist costumers that bring in devices to download from the library system, she (Kate Harvis, Assistant Director of the Mesa Public Library ) said that they have applied for a federal government grant so that they can get funding to put in a display featuring the newest e-reader devices; similar to how cellphone stores have displays of demo versions of each cellphone.

“We would like to put a display like that in each one of our locations, so again we have a chance for people to come in, look at them, compare them, play with them,” Harvis said. “It’s a public service. It’s just like the next logical step.”

She said that she will find out if Mesa libraries will receive the grant in May and would like to start the display within the next year.

Harvis said that you do not need an e-reader to check out an e-book, and also since checking out e-books is a 24/7 system, it doesn’t matter if libraries or bookstores are open physically. People can still check out books whereas the printed versions they need to be in order for them to be given.

Director of the Mesa Public Library Heather Wolf, said that many libraries are just trying to react to the new set of questions they are receiving every day and has noticed that they are obviously filling a need."

2010 seems to be an important year for the “eReader” market.

While ePaper was hot at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, on January 27th Apple announced the iPad which is seen as a serious opponent to Amazon's Kindle. As soon as it started shipping the iPad exceeded sales expectations : 3 million iPads were sold in 80 days.

If we consider the ePaper market only, the perspectives are very promising. Prime View International (PVI) chairman Scott Liu has said he expects global e-book reader shipments in 2010 will have a chance to surpass 10 million since over 50 new vendors are expected to launch e-book devices this year (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20100204PD218.html).

Companies investing in eReaders like Amazon have found their market, according to famous TechCrunch blog,

“Millions of people now own Kindles,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com .... We’ve checked with our sources, who have been amazingly accurate on the number of Kindle’s sold over the last couple of years. The total number of all types of Kindles out there in users hands hit 3 million sometime in December (2009), says a source close to Amazon.. Quelle TVA s'applique sur les eBooks ?

En réponse à une question sur la TVA des eBooks que j'ai reçue récemment, voici ma compréhension de la question.

En Belgique, comme vendeur, la TVA (21%) s'applique également sur les eBooks.

Comme acheteur, la question est de savoir on est dans quel pays on achète.

Exemples.

J'ai acheté un ebook en France et j'ai payé 19,6% de TVA.

Sur un ebook Américain, sur Amazon je n'ai payé apparement aucune taxe.

Sur l'App Store, une TVA de 21% s'applique. Cfr http://store.apple.com/be-fr/help/payments

La TVA pourrait donc influencer l'achat de ceux qui recherchent les meilleurs prix. Les eBookStores Européens sont un peu défavorisés d’où les discussions sur l'harmonisation et la baisse de la TVA européenne sur les eBooks.

Je n'ai pas (encore) trouvé l'information officielle (via Google).

Two University Press Ebook Initiatives Merge: "Project MUSE Editions (PME) and the University Press ebook Consortium (UPeC) have formed a new partnership called the University Press Content Consortium (UPCC), which will launch January 1, 2012.

The new nonprofit venture will offer an integrated environment where users will be able to discover and search ebook content from a projected 60-70 university presses and nonprofit scholarly presses (the Association of American University Presses has 125 members). The collection will offer as many as 30,000 frontlist and backlist titles alongside nearly 500 journals from Project MUSE."

Voici un problème que les développeurs Android on détecté : le classement des applications n'est pas "juste".

Les développeurs Android s’unissent contre la politique de Google sur le Market « FrAndroid Communauté Android: "- Avoir un classement plus juste des applications

La navigation sur l’Android Market se fait soit grâce aux nouvelles applications, soit aux classements (top gratuit, payant…). La liste des applications récentes est constamment mise à jour, vu que la plateforme est populaire. Par conséquent, lors d’un nouvel ajout, l’application est seulement visible quelques minutes. Pour les tops, seuls les gros succès sont référencés et plus particulièrement ceux présents depuis la création de la plateforme. Il n’y a quasiment aucun espace pour les nouveautés.
L’union souhaite que Google implémente une autre manière pour naviguer dans les applications populaires, avec différentes fenêtres de temps et pour différentes régions (pays).

Il en est de même pour les eBooks. Quels eBooks doivent se retrouver en première page d'un eBookstore ? Comment donner une chance égale à tous les eBooks qui se valent ? C'est l'un des buts du composant appellé "Grasduinen" dans l'Architecture du VeP.

How to attract readers into slow reading ?

Today I had to read several documents for about an hour, so I took the opportrunity to use my ePaper eReader (iRex DR1000S). Since the iPad it has been a while I hadn't used it.

I was than thinking, why do I prefer my iRex when I know I'm going to work longer ?

First I can make annotations because it has a pen.

Second, it displays nicely A4 documents with nearly no distortion.

But in fact it's because I associate ePaper with "slow reading". An iPad is very cool for "fast reading", you jump from page to page, back and forth, up and down. But when concentration is required those features become less relevant. You just need a "next page" button.

So there is a need for a lighter, different device when concentration is important. The question is : how often do you take the time to completely read a document ? When do you read for more than 30 minutes in the same document ?

"Slow reading" also asks the question of selecting a book. How are you goind to choose the ebook in the 1000s of eBooks out there. How are you going to find out that it's what you need ? With your tablet ? With your PC ? But than you are already reading. Are you going to switch device ? When ? How ?

The technology at our disposal doesn't solve that problem (yet). You'd need a Tablet to select what to read and and Paper to "slow read" it.

Only the entourage edge was going in this direction but I have read it has been stopped recently.

Comment convertir proprement un livre en eBook ?

Pour moi il n'y a qu'une manière : tout reprendre à la base. Ne comptez pas trop sur des convertisseurs "magiques".

C'est une erreur de penser qu'on peut convertir du PDF ou du MS Word facilement en ePub ou pour le Kindle.

Retrouvez vos sources (textes et images) et utilisez des outils natifs... Au final, à qualité égale ça ira plus vite et vous resterez maîtres de votre contenu.

Ensuite vous pourrez combiner vos textes et vos images avec de la vidéo et de l'Audio pour créer de nouvelles expériences : des livres enrichis. Avec un produit fini fourni par une tierce partie, vous ne pourrez pas l'enrichir et il faudra repartir de 0.

Prenez le contôle du processus de fabrication de vos livres électroniques. Less is more. Yes we can...

Comment Luc Pire Applique les principes de l'eReading Reference Architecture

Demain commence le salon du livre de Bruxelles. J'ai l'intention de m'y rendre afin de mieux comprendre comment les éditeurs présents en Belgique abordent la question de l'édition du livre numérique.

En attendant, il y a un éditeur pour lequel l'approche me semble assez claire : Luc Pire.

Voyons comment Luc Pire utilise les 4 tiers de l'eReading Reference Architecture :

eReader

Luc Pire se base essentiellement sur une publication sur Amazon. Cette publication permet d’adresser en un coup la publication sur l'iPad et sur tablette/téléphone Android qui sont les appareils de lecture probablement les plus fréquents en Belgique . On peut aussi le télécharger sur un Kindle mais celui-ci est moins répandu en Belgique.

Internet

Sur Internet, Luc Pire utilise principalement trois plateformes:

Facebook : Il y a au moins deux points de présence pour la promotion http://www.facebook.com/lucpire et le groupe Facebook "Utilisateurs de Tablettes Belgique"
Amazon.com. Notez que Amazon présente tout de même un inconvénient : il faut acheter le livre en Dollars ou en Pound.

Entreprise

Vu que Amazon permet l'ingestion de documents MS Word pour les livres numérique, je suppose que la gestion des livres se résume au stockage du document MS Word du livre ainsi que quelques fichiers image supplémentaires pour la couverture. Dans le cas ou une édition plus poussée a été réalisée, des outils ou approches plus spécifiques sont possibles (par exemple: Kindle MobiPocket Tools). Elles donnent un meilleur contrôle sur le résultat final.

Vu le nombre de livres publiés pour l'instant, je ne pense pas qu'un CMS avec gestion des méta-données soit nécessaire/utilisé.

Desktop

La création des livre s'est probablement faite dans MS Word, vu la possibilité d'uploader ce type de fichiers sur la plateforme Kindle d'Amazon.

Par rapport à cette approche du livre numérique, on peut se poser les questions suivantes :

Que se passe-t-il avec la marge si Amazon abuse de sa position dominante ?
Une présence plus "Belge" est-elle souhaitable ? Amazon ne propose que deux boutiques : USA et Angleterre. Un eCommerce plus "Belge" pourrait dégager une image plus sympathique. Notez que Luc Pire compense en activant les médias alternatifs tels que la télé et la radio. L'idée est de ramener du trafic sur Internet/Facebook et ensuite diriger vers Amazon.com. Je ne pense pas que beaucoup de lecteurs s'orientent directement sur Amazon.
CRM : La relation client est-elle suffisamment établie par ce modèle ?

En résumé on peut dire que l'approche numérique de Luc Pire fait une utilisation efficace d'outils disponibles sur l'Internet: Kindle Publishing Platform (KDP), Facebook...

Ceci permet une publication numérique "Low Cost" car les investissements sont minimes tout en permettant une présence d'une certaine qualité.

Bref, un bon début, mais peut mieux faire...

Today I added one picture to the eReading Reference Architecture : the multichannel publishing options for the press (newspapers).

Today newspapers face the challenge of optimizing the use and return of eReading Devices. To do so at least two options can co-exist :

A digital kiosk where they will sell an electronic version, more or less matching the regular paper experience
The use of a news aggregator which will re-publish groups of related articles as specific media channels targeted for specific audiences. The aggregator can be used to distribute and sell specific news to the readers who don't want to read all the news but only a piece of it (for example : only news about motor-sports)

There are than 4 publishing options for newspaper, as the following picture illustrates.

When looking at this picture, the main questions for newspapers are the following :

Which channels are really important to me ?
How to optimize my return on articles by using the 4 channels ?
How to avoid the cannibalization of a channel by another one ?
How to minimize the investments in building the channels ?

Those questions can be solved by using adequate portfolio management techniques. By segmenting the types of readers/the type of reading and the content channels, one can determine a service offering that will optimize the return on investment on the content.

Journée du livre numérique à Bruxelles, ce 7 février 2011

La journée du livre 2011 de ce 7 février était riche d'informations sur les initiatives Françaises et Flamandes. J'aurais voulu en savoir plus sur les futures initiatives Belges Francophones. (Peut-être en saurons nous en d'avantage quand la ministre de la culture Fadila Laanan aura finalisé, dans un ou deux mois, le plan d'action numérique pour la Communauté Française). Quelques infos et extraits de mes notes.

Cette journée sur le Livre Numérique 2011, donnait suite à une série de journées organisées par, ou avec le concours de, la Communeauté Française. J'avais assisté a une de ces journées a TechnoFutur : le livre soluble dans le net.

Tout d'abord, Mme Garsou a rappelé les différentes actions du Service Lettres et Livres de la Communauté Française. Il y a un plan numérique de la Communeauté Française qui base sur 2 axes:

Un entrepôt numérique, géré par PEPS (Numérisation du Patrimoine)
La promotion des auteurs via un "Portail numérique". Ce portail sera d'abord ouvert aux professionnels (pour faire de la promotion en interne sans doutes) puis au public en septembre. Portail ? Chouette, c'était ma spécialité chez HP et mes meilleures ventes chez IBM...

De multiples autres actions ont été ou seront entreprises:

Les 6 journées sur la lecture numérique
50 interviews visant à la consultation des acteurs du livre par Clothilde Guislain
Veille numérique, avec une lettre d'information lancée le 4 février (accès ? url ?)
Des formations pour les libraires et les éditeurs
Un vadémécum des livres électroniques
La libération de budgets pour la numérisation de livres via le CNL en France
Des discussions sur la concurrence des ebookstore Français avec les Belges
La base de donnée des auteurs
L'ouverture d'un espace numérique dans l'Adeb

Quel type de distribution? Entrepôt unique (gallimard et eden) ou distribution eclatée avec amazon, apple ?
Les gens cherchent des pdf
Le Marquage numerique avec identifiant est sufisant pour limiter le piratage
La finitude du livre : le livre n'est pas un espace qui est pas ouvert a l'infini. Cependant, tout comme la pyramide de Maslow, il y a différents niveaux de profondeur qui composent un livre.
Drm: 80% du sav des livres concerne le drm
Il n'y a pas de "Napster" du livre. (Note: Bitorrent fonctionne suffisamment bien sans doute...)
Attendez-vous aux virus dans les livres numeriques...

Comment aller vers une demande ? La est la question de départ...
2er point mutations : la continuité dans la révolution ? Regarder en arriere... L'histoire du livre. Tablette d'argile, codex, méta-donnes, reproductibilité du livre, imprimerie, gutemberg, garamond:graveur du temps de Francois 1er, Mutations irreversibles et totales...
2e point: (livre numérique=) le laboratoire ouvert. Il n y a pas de modèles, que des chemins de traverse.
La chaine des acteurs du livre est déchaînée...
Faudrait que le progres fasse des progres (exemple du telephone de proust en 1909)
L odeur du papier = la chaux, les produits chimiques. Le papier semble simple (mais ne l'est pas).
Comment donner l'envie aux gens de faire l'effort de rentrer dans l'oeuvre ?
L'espace numerique est déjà dans l'intimité. Dans les universités ils installent maintenant des brouilleurs (pour ne pas perturber les cours).

4e point : nos usages. Spotify, j'ecoute a volonte pour 10 euros. Finalement le pacte moral est : "comment les flux retribuent-ils les auteurs ?"

pour les garder. Donc le piratage est du au manque d'offre légale (face a une demande concrète).
Catalogues de qualité au niveau des meta-données. Description des livres, fait aujourd’hui par les bibliothécaires en aval
Fluidifier l experience d achat. Etre aussi bon ou meilleur que Amazon ou Apple.
Quid du "bon à tirer" numerique ? Le Contrôle qualité numérique ? Par opposition aux Epub à la chaine...
La pression d'Amazon, a créé un accueil favorable à Apple sur le marché.
Contrat d agence aux US et contrat de mandat en France.
Même aux USA, les libraires ont une chance de développer leurs activités en prolongeant leur capacités sur le web.

Quand l'iPad déçoit...

Mon fils de 7 ans avait eu un beau bulletin l'année passée. Comme il aime jouer avec mon iPad, je lui avait promis de lui offrir une application. Il a choisi Toy Story 3 Read Along. C'est un livre électronique enrichi. Le livre se lit tout seul (en Anglais). Il y a aussi des jeux intégrés au livre ainsi que de la musique. Mon fils était ravi.

Puis il y a eu un update de iOS, vers 4.2.1 je pense. Et là, problème : l'application ne fonctionne plus bien.
Le livre se lit encore mais on sait difficilement sélectionner les jeux et les puzzles. Mon fils est très très déçu. Je lui dit toujours que Disney finira par mettre l'application à jour, mais voici déjà plusieurs mois et rien ne vient.

Ceci pose la question de la pérénnité des applications que l'on achète sur l'AppStore. Combien de temps vont-elles fonctionner ? Que se passera-t-il avec les anciennes applications lorsque l'iPad 2 sera-là ?

On pourrait considérer que les apps sont des produits éphémères, un peu comme les jeux vidéos qui deviennent obsolètes dès que la nouvelle saison arrive et les equipes de foot ont changé.

Mais quid des livres ? Quand ils sont packagés comme app, est-il normal qu'ils aient une durée de vie limitée. Un livre Disney ne devrait-il pas se transmettre de génération en générations ?

D'un côté, les enfants veulent les dernières animations possibles mais de l'autre ils s'attachent à leurs jeux et les veulent intemporels. Et là, l'iPad pourrait décevoir.

Au plus j'utilise mon iPad, au plus je redécouvre l'Internet et je redécouvre l'intérêt des standards tels que HTML(5), XML, ePub...

Bien sûr il est moins facile de créer de l'interactivité avec des standards (quoique), mais il convient, pour chaque produit numérique, de penser à sa valeur sur le long terme.

My best guess is that those people have bought a Galaxy Tab without knowing exactly what is a Galaxy Tab.
- it's too big for a moble phone
- it's more complex to use that a mobile phone. You need to get Android.

1. Upload the text file to your Dropbox

2. Download it with Goodreader. Goodreader has a basic text editor included that will allow you to edit the text.

Voici un article en Français qui explique a nouveau le "problème" des groupes de presse Belges avec Apple.

Pourquoi je n'ai pas suivi Apple à 100%

L'année passée j'ai investi dans le matériel Apple, ensuite j'ai évalué l'opportunité de devenir développeur iPhone/iPad moi-même et j'ai décide de ne pas le faire:

le modèle de programmation me semblait trop peu productif et complexe pour de la simple lecture électronique
les développeurs Off-shore ou near-shore sont aussi bons que moi et moi chers
l'ecosystème Apple (communauté) me semblait trop fermé

Réflexions d'Architecte

En lieu et place, j'ai préféré réfléchir sur l'architecture des systèmes de lecture électronique. Une bonne réflexion par rapport aux canaux de distribution électroniques pour les journaux devrait selon moi s'orienter autour des axes suivants :

Gestion centralisée du contenu
Avoir au moins 3 canaux de distribution numérique payant, transparents pour le client avec services à valeur ajoutée. Contrôle suffisant d'au moins un canal de distribution électronique
Utilisation des standards ouverts, afin de ne pas dépendre de fournisseurs technologiques au niveau software (Ex: Apple AppStore, Adobe DRM...) : HTML, PDF, ePUB... et au niveau hardware (le lecteur doit pouvoir lire ses articles sur n'importe quel appareil)

En 2010, la plupart des journaux Belges se sont rués vers l'iPad afin d'y proposer leur contenu. Maintenant qu'ils ont bien investi dans des Apps mises à disposition via l'Apple AppStore, Apple commencerait-il à les "rançonner" ?

Toute vente sur un iPad doit désormais recevoir la bénédiction de Apple et régulièrement passer par la case départ... Il semble que Corelio et Roularta sont les premières victimes de cet abus de position dominante.

D'un côté, il est vrai que l'iPad est une machine très séduisante par rapport aux tablettes ou aux systèmes concurrents. Ceci explique sans doute ses 75% de parts de marché. Comme éditeur, on se doit de proposer son contenu sur l'iPad.

Mais de l'autre côté, on peut se poser deux questions :

1. Faut-il automatiquement publier son contenu via l'AppStore ? Ne peut on pas utiliser des techniques moins propriétaires pour vendre son contenu ? PDF, ePub, HTML me semblent suffisants pour délivrer de la valeur aux lecteurs. Plusieurs startups surfent cette vague pour l'instant. La tendance est à l'HTML5...

Il est nécésaire d'avoir recours à une application native lorsqu'on désire utiliser les fonctionalités suivantes :
géolocalisation, camera, address book, send/receive, SMS/calls, accéléromètre.

Facebook n'a pas besoin d'application iPad...

2. Est-il prudent de miser sur le seul cheval Apple ? La voie de l'AppStore n'est elle pas sans issue par rapport à d'autres canaux de vente, que ce soient des liseuses ePaper ou des téléphones ou tablettes Android - pour n'en citer que deux ? Ce qu'on déploie sur l'AppStore est-il réutilisable ?

Seule une analyse des besoins et des objectifs permet de déterminer quel est le bon choix.

Si les applications iPad semblent aider à atteindre les objectifs financiers, ils ne contribuent pas un autre objectif : se constituer une offre de services indépendante de la technologie...

Si les lecteurs et les editeurs ne peuvent se rencontrer que sur l'iPad, naturellement Apple en profite...

Je parle souvent aux éditeurs de veiller à avoir au moins un canal de vente "sous contrôle" lorsque j'explique mon architecture de référence ePaper. (voir ma présentation Passionat People, Slide 20).

La plupart préferrent tout de même faire confiance à Apple, Amazon ou Google. Ca a l'air plus simple, mais finalement cela a aussi un prix...

How to protect ePub eBooks ?

Our new eBook "Android Une Fois" is now on amazon.com. It's ok, the only problem being that it's written in French and I'd like to better reach French speaking customers...

So I have been thinking about other distribution mechanisms.

One of them would be to send the ePub by email after someone has paid me (BE money transfer).

But than, once it is send, how to avoid that the mail gets forwarded everywhere ?

I have been investigating a bit ePub protection. It seems there are several scenarios

Plain DRM : find an eBookstore that provides plain DRM on ePub files (like Adobe DRM)
Watermark (visible and invisible) an image (the cover or all images) in the ePub with the email of the customer. Easy to remove.
Watermark the text (visible and invisible) with the email of the customer (also easy to remove)
Digitally sign a file within the ePub

where the author James Kendrick seems to say that Microsoft has got it all wrong, I posted the following comment:

When there were rumors of a windows Tablet (the courier, if you remember) I thought that Microsoft could offer a strong alternative to the iPad. What we see here is the collision between two kind of systems: Desktop OS Vs Mobile OS.

As usual, Microsoft starts from far but in the end they finally get somewhere. Look at IE, at
Axapta (CRM), at Sharepoint...

What you should ask is not: “what is good to Microsoft ?”, but “what is good for the user ?”

My answer is: it depends.

It depends on the needs and the kind of applications that make that person productive. If all his productivity applications are based on "Windows Servers" or MS Office or Outlook, or any other WIN32 the windows tablet might be the best for this person.

Before deciding I suggest everyone to make an analysis on the 4 Tiers of what I call the eReading Reference Architecture : eReader (ePaper or Tablet), Desktop, Internet and

It's only when you look at the complete lifecycle of your digital contents that you can choose the right tablet for you.

In the case of ebooks, a Kindle is even nicer...

Flipboard is a great eReading application on the iPad. It allows to read Internet feeds (like RSS) and transform it in a nice kind of eBook. You can flip the pages of your RSS feeds as if they were an eBook or a magazine.

Last week I suddenly received the following message from feedbooks (see screenshot) : "Starting today, eight renowned publishers will be testing an innovative new way to bring the timeless beauty of print media to the Web..."

This means that you can now use Flipboard to read magazines.

This is yet another way to read a magazine on a tablet (the iPad in this case). There are several ways to read magazines on a tablet : Woodwing, eLinea, Kobo, Zinio...

What is the best system ? It is too soon to tell, they all improve everyday. I believe the main success criterias will be the following :

Speed of download: some magazines consume way too much MB and take ages to download
Speed and ease of navigation, sometimes you get lost in magazines
Good content with opportune multi-media integration
Readability and Layout - sometimes there is too much text
A good mix between paid and free content
Content optimized to the profile of the reader
Well designed non intrusive feedback possibilities (comments, Social Networking...)

This morning I had a quick look at Google eBooks.

When you arrive there you see you have 3 ebooks in "My eBook". Select one of those than click the 'Read Now' button. You will be able to start reading the eBook.

I find the Interface exactly what it needs to be : very simple. With a tablet in your hands I think it's close enough to reading a real book... Future will tell.

La prochaine évolution industrielle: L'iPad, ami des arbres: "Dans le cadre d'un mémoire de maîtrise réalisé en 2007 à l'Université de Sherbrooke, en partenariat avec le Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur l'analyse du cycle de vie (CIRAIG) de l'École Polytechnique, nous avons comparé les impacts environnementaux d'un journal par rapport à un papier électronique sur l'ensemble du cycle de vie. L'analyse révèle que le papier électronique a sept fois moins d'impact sur les changements climatiques qu'un journal. Elle montre également qu'il y a des gains significatifs dans toutes les catégories d'impacts: santé humaine, qualité des écosystèmes et utilisation des ressources.

On comprend vite que le journal en papier est désavantagé quand on considère que la plupart des gens ne lisent que quelques articles par jour, mais qu'il faut imprimer toutes les pages du journal pour les lire.

En comparaison, combien de livres faudrait-il lire pour que le bilan environnemental de l'iPad devienne plus avantageux? Entre 40 et 100, selon la catégorie d'impact environnemental. C'est du moins la conclusion d'une analyse du cycle de vie de l'iPad publiée dans le New York Times récemment. Cela équivaut donc à lire un livre par semaine pendant deux ans. C'est beaucoup."

Earlier this week, I blogged about Google Boutiques : a new way to shop on the web.

After a discussion I had at Devoxx with a smart person, it seems there is a name for what I feel will become very important for Internet Sales in the future :

the "leading voices"

What we can see in Boutiques is that product are not presented by themselves. They are presented by popular people who kind of tell us : "Hey this is cool".

Translated to eReading, it's very possible that you will rely on leading voices for choosing what to read : which ebooks should I buy ? which journalists are present on the web ?

Europe1 already made the shift. If you look at their website you will see only but leading voices...

Chinese e-reader price war is heating up: "Digitimes are reporting that Hanvon, MReader, and other Chinese e-reader manufacturers have lowered their prices for the domestic Chinese market.

Hanvon Technology, currently the largest vendor of e-book readers in the China market, has lowered its retail prices by 200-300 yuan (US$30-45) on average, with the lowest price reaching 950 yuan, according to report by China-based Beijing Morning Post. The price war for e-book readers in the China market has kicked off and there are expected to be rounds of price-cut competition, the source cited China-based consulting company Analysys International as indicating.

In addition to Hanvon, fellow vendor MReader has cut the retail price for its S600 e-book reader to 999 yuan and another vendor Gorld has cut the price for its 500T to about 1,000 yuan.

If you’re thinking that $45 isn’t a big change, keep in mind that the Nook-Kindle price war only dropped the price $80, and that happened mainly becuase B&N wanted to price the Nook Wifi in relation to the Kobo e-reader.

Ceci est un bel exemple de refus d'adaptation à un monde qui change.

Pourquoi commander un livre sur le web puis aller le chercher alors qu'on pourrait le downloader directement ?

parcequ'on préferre le papier. Ok mais alors n'importe quel point relai devrait fonctionner. On peut se le faire livrer dans une station essence, c'est ouvert plus tôt et plus tard.
parcequ'on veut en discuter avec le libraire... avec lequel on est déjà peut-être connectés sur 5 reseaux sociaux ?

Ok mais...

Il y a ici une opportunité ratée de la part des libraires. Qu'est-ce qu'une librairie ? Pourquoi on irait encore dans une librairie si on aime lire des livres électroniques ? Comment le libraire va-t'il gagner sa vie dans le futur ?

Le libraire dispose d'une surface commerciale qu'il doit utiliser de manière optimale pour maximiser son revenu. Dans 5 ans la moitié des gens liront au format électronique. Pourquoi iraient-ils dans une librairie ?

pour imprimer un morceau du livre (les meilleurs passages, les photos)
pour imprimer leurs notes
pour acheter une liseuse, la faire réparer, acheter des accessoires
pour discuter le coup avec les gens qui lisent les mêmes genres de livres, réunion organisée par le libraire qui aura réussi a rester au contact de clients (ce qui suppose une présence électronique)
pour avoir accès au contenu complet du livre électronique avant d'acheter (comme avec le papier), hors lalibrairie.com propose l'inverse !!!
pour rencontrer les écrivains en vrai
...

Je m’arrête là mais il y a pleins de choses à imaginer. Il me semble qu'un libraire qui a des idées peut faire bien plus que d'être un dépôt de commerce électronique. Mais il faut réinventer son métier...
